So, the bottom line here is that Podcasts has a compatible version for IOS 6 in App Store, but Apple does not advert this to users unless you already have it installed on your iPod and make it very hard to get. Podcasts are my main use of this perfectly functional device and so getting support for this App was personally very important to me.
I hope this helps other users. If you had downloaded the podcasts app while iOS6 was the most recent, then you would have a version of the podcasts app that was compatible with it.
Unfortunately the current version of the podcasts app is written using iOS7 APIs, including ones to automatically download content for you without you having to manually open the app etc, which are not backwards compatible.
You can listen to podcasts with the Music app, if you do not want to conform by running iOS7 or run a third party app. I had the same issue. I have an iPhone 3Gs which cannot upgrade beyond iOS 6.
So I cannot download any version of Podcasts. As others already noted, one solution is downloading a third party app. After reading various reviews, I chose Downcast which works very well. Personally, I think it is very strange that Apple themselves are actively preventing using their own app.
Maybe this wasn't operational right away, but I just now December 9, downloaded the Apple Podcast app on my ios 6 iPhone 3gs from the App Store. I clicked download, and voila! Apple iOS 6 is the successor version for iOS 5. The manufacturer introduced some interesting facilities here, and you can easily upgrade iOS 6 by following settings, general, and then software update up to iOS 6.

No - this no longer works. I was prompted by Apple to update my 3GS to 6. This app shows up on purchases, offers to go for an earlier version than the current IOS 7 compatible version, then says it is not available. Same is true for the Facebook app.
LTE support for 36 more carriers has also been added. Surely, this release is not the next big thing by any stretch, yet it includes many small improvements that will surely be welcome by some users especially those who have always wondered why they had to be on a Wi-Fi network in order to download iTunes content. Surely, Apple is already hard at work on an upcoming major upgrade for iOS, although, for the time being, iOS 6.
